How to be Useful — Tom Hardy Style

There’s an infamous line by Tom Hardy, in the TV series Taboo.

‘I have a use for you.’

He says it multiple times and it meant multiple things including revenge, roguery and a few other radical things.

BTW I despise people who spoil TV shows.
I almost punched a mate at college because he was dropping Game of Thrones spoilers.
It’s a dick move of the highest order.

So I wont’ speak more about the show, except about this line and that when he said it I got the sense the receiver felt better for it.

We all want to feel useful.
We all want someone else to need us for something.

There’s a neurochemical reaction underpinning this buzz called Helpers High.

A mix of dopamine and all the other brain jizz words associated with feeling awesome.

It’s one of the reasons why…
Even when you’re completely exhausted in an emergency
you can find the infinity gear and go way beyond
what you thought you were capable.

Sometimes I sit and wonder how I can be useful today.
Do you?

I find if I’m stuck the simplest way is to send someone a voice message about how helpful they’ve been to you.

Because this repays the favour.
They get a nostalgic squirt of helpers high and if they’re in a funk
it can be the tiny thing that redirects them to have a rad day.

I got a nice message today as I hit the office from a friend I hadn’t heard from in a while.

Earlier in the day my other friend helped me tow my van out of a ditch.

My reflection was, as we head into fluctuatingly uncertain times, it’s more and more important to be useful to the ones wecare about, so when we need them they’re there.

Reciprocity is underrated.
