April was strong. Like Arnie strong.

We are now a third of the way through this year-long experiment and from most accounts this has been four of the most productive months of people’s lives. And we admit, we’re not all 100% on track at this stage. But! In the same way a T-800 Terminator looks into the future that he’s already lived, we look to our calendars and know we can make it to Judgement Day (31/12/2017) on or under 101 Tokens.

Yeah we are!

Confused about what the 101 token game is?

This is based on an average of token crew’s updated numbers

Countries tokens used in: 15

Yays vs Nays: 71% yays

Single highest tokens used by one person: 16

Single Lowest: 2. Strong month.

Some super obvious, other not so much…

Witness the Fitness

We are a group of shredders: 3 marathons, countless halfys, ocean swims, Tough Mudders, joining Boot Camps and the list goes on. We’re not saying our crew wouldn’t have achieved these awesome feats without the Token Game, but we can guarantee training without hangovers and the evaluation of how we drink definitely helped our cause.

Nothing can keep this guy down

Nerding Up

The token crew are pounding the extra-curricular activities outside of their normal work too. We’re studying stuff, reading loads, sharing podcasts and just opening up more. As a wider society, I’m not sure we understand the wealth of knowledge we have access to now. Literally, any topic you want to learn more about you can listen to the greatest minds debate about it.

So many good teachers out there. They’ll save you and your mum’s life from a crazy x-boyfriend.

We thought we’d throw in a few links to podcasts and online course websites we’ve been loving and sharing:

Team Human is about human intervention by humans for the good of humans. It’s super empowering across a breadth of subjects with some of the people who are fighting the system in the name of remaining human. FYI — The first 20 min’ monologue in the first episode about how the internet came about is off the hook!

Just the best. Tim Ferriss deconstructs world-class performers — everyone from our very own (in this blog post) Arnold Schwarzenegger to Malcolm Gladwell, to all in between. Essentially the leaders and renegades in all fields feature. What’s more, Tim’s method of turning life into one big experiment had a big hand in the 101 token challenge becoming a thing in the first place.

Sometimes controversial, but who isn’t. Sam Harris will blow your mind across many topics and looks in depth at why we do the things we do. We’ll give you a hint, it’s all in your mind. ;)

Both Future Learn and Coursera provide awesome free courses from the best universities and colleges around the globe. Some of us are doing mindfulness, others researching addiction. Get into it, you wont regret it.

Booze is still a vice for escaping

It’s true. We’ve all used it for the means of forgetting about how tough work is, accidents we’ve had, losing a big game of footy — whatever it is, it feels justified at the time.

This is often the question…

A new friend of mine put it beautifully in that we are using ‘self-enquiry’ every time we drink and review our decisions. Maybe we really needed that drink to blow off some steam. And that’s fine. But if we did push it a little far, it’s the self-enquiry the next day or at the end of the month that should help to avoid the same mistakes. We know some people are good at subbing out benders for a gym, boxing or surf session, but others not so much.

So here’s hoping at the end of the year, we’ve all swapped release-boozing (we just made that up) for another less harmful vice. And save the boozing for having a fucking great time.

What we use our tokens for:

We celebrate harbour swim feats.
We Football with the Lads
We beer fest.

The things we do instead of drinking are ALMOST the most important things we do

We hike with the family
We report on the Champions League.
We chill with our doggies.

Yes Josh! Thanks for this insightful look into traveling with the token game and how that plays out in countries where drinking is such a huge part of the culture; and in others, where they don’t need to drink at all to have fun.

Josh goes from unemployed, to working in foreign lands, to winning awards, losing contests and surfing some of the world’s most beautiful coastlines.

Surf’s up, salt’s down.
